Beaufort on the Belgian coast: sculpture in the landscape

Prepare a contemporary art walk around the permanent Beaufort sculpture collection.

A collection to explore

Beaufort connects contemporary art with coastal landscapes. Distinguish the temporary event from its permanent sculpture park: works from different editions remain in coastal municipalities. For a visit outside an edition, start with the permanent park's information rather than an old event programme. A past festival calendar does not establish which route will work best for your visit today.

Begin with a few works

Do not try to cover the whole collection in one outing. Choose a small group of works near your accommodation and check their current locations through official information. A sculpture may have moved or be undergoing maintenance. Plan enough time to look, walk around and read the interpretation. Travel should support the visit rather than consume all the time available.

Look at the surroundings too

Begin without reading the label. What do the shape, material and scale suggest to you? Then notice what changes as you move farther away. Public art relates to the horizon, buildings and people passing by. Read the title and background after this first impression. There is no need for everyone to agree on one correct interpretation; different reactions can make the walk more interesting.

Walking, cycling or using the tram

Choose transport according to your selected works. Walk where they are close together. Use a map and check the final return service if adding the coastal tram. A dot on a map does not necessarily mean direct access from a stop. With children, reduce the number of works and let everyone describe the one that interests them most.

Visit respectfully

Some locations have access restrictions or are affected by weather. Stay on authorised paths, do not climb sculptures without an explicit invitation and do not seek an exposed position for a photograph. Check future event dates with the organiser. A previous rhythm is not a confirmed calendar. This guide recommends the permanent collection and makes no promise about a future manifestation. Allow your route to change if a selected location cannot be reached legitimately.
