Westhoek in De Panne: planning a dune walk
Maps, route choice and a car-free arrival: explore the Westhoek dunes with a prepared walking plan.

A landscape to explore on foot
Westhoek is one of the natural areas presented by the municipality of De Panne. Start with an identified route rather than a general intention to walk towards the sea. Sand, changes in relief and observation stops call for a different pace from a seafront promenade. Our advice is to match the route to the person who wants the shortest walk. Make the dunes your main activity and avoid automatically adding another long excursion. That leaves room to stop and look without constantly worrying about the rest of the programme.
Download the walking map first
The municipality recommends downloading a walking plan and states that reservation is not required for Westhoekreservaat. That does not mean every part of the terrain is open to wandering. Use the indicated paths and entrances, then follow signs on the site. If a section is closed, change the route instead of going around the protection. Our suggestion is to save the map offline and identify a shorter return before setting out. You can then respond to tiredness or wind without having to invent a new itinerary on the spot.

An option starting at the station
The Province of West Flanders presents the Groene Halte Westhoekreservaat & Calmeynbos walk, beginning at De Panne station and finishing at Duinpanne visitor centre. Read its description and examine the route to decide whether it suits your group. The complete walk is not simply a quick connection to the beach. For a shorter visit, choose an appropriate route from the municipal walking plan. Then check SNCB/NMBS services and any local transport for your date. Calculate walking time separately rather than inferring it from your train's arrival time.
Walk with care
Bring suitable footwear, water and protection from the wind, and take your litter away. For a dog, pushchair or wheelchair, check the manager's instructions for your chosen route: a general description does not describe every path. Do not approach animals that may be present, and keep access points clear. Our suggestion is to pause in a permitted place and compare dune shapes and vegetation. Reading the landscape gives the walk a purpose without leaving the path for a photograph. Check your return journey too, so you do not need to hurry through the final part of the area.
