A day between city and sea
Ostend, called Oostende in Dutch, lends itself to a car-free outing. The station is central, within walking reach of the seafront and shopping streets. It offers a convenient starting point for combining a waterside walk and a cultural visit without repeated transfers. Visit Ostend explains the access options on its official website. For a first visit, we suggest heading towards the seafront from the station, setting aside time for an urban walk and choosing one exhibition. This leaves room for breaks and adapts more easily to the weather than a tightly packed list.
Choose a walk rather than trying to see everything
Visit Ostend offers maritime walks, an Ensor walk and routes focused on The Crystal Ship street art. Choose the subject that interests you and read the route before setting out. Our advice is to keep the outdoor part for the most pleasant weather and an indoor visit as a fallback. Look at how the route returns to your next stop; a themed walk can become tiring if you unexpectedly add a long final transfer.
Mu.ZEE: check the exhibition address
Mu.ZEE's main Romestraat building is under renovation, with reopening planned for 2028. Activities continue elsewhere, including the Venetian Galleries. Choose an exhibition and use its address rather than heading to the main building. This information was checked on 29 October 2026.
Arrive by train and continue by tram
Ostend station is at Natiënkaai 1. NMBS/SNCB lists bus and tram connections and assistance for passengers with reduced mobility. Consult the station information for services and assistance arrangements. Prepare both outward and return journeys with the railway planner. For another resort, check the day's De Lijn services and our coastal tram guide. Set the return time before adding a second destination.
Prepare the beach and local travel
If bringing a pushchair or mobility aid, begin with Visit Ostend's accessibility information. Check parking, beach rules and activities with the tourism office before departure. Conditions from another municipality do not automatically apply here. To continue exploring, see our museum guide, coastal destinations and the information currently available on the sea.
