Dogs on Belgian coastal beaches
Check local rules and prepare a beach walk with your dog.

Local rules, not permission for the entire coast
Choose a specific beach and check its municipality. Season, time and zone affect where you can walk. Read signs at the entrance, especially near a municipal boundary. Permission on the sand does not automatically extend to dunes or a neighbouring reserve.
Two checked examples
| Municipality | General rule and exceptions |
|---|---|
| Ostend | General access from 1 October to 31 March. In April, May, June and September: before 10 am and after 6.30 pm; in July and August: before 10 am and after 8 pm. Some zones remain open all year, with local lead requirements. |
| Bredene | From 15 June to 15 September, restrictions apply between 10.30 am and 6.30 pm, with exception zones. The municipal page also explains when and where leads are required. |
These examples do not cover every beach. For Koksijde, consulted official documents contain different starting dates. We therefore publish no single period without municipal confirmation.
Prepare your walk
Find the permitted entrance and an option for returning earlier. Bring a lead, water, bowl and bags. Respect other walkers and keep your dog away from birds and seals. If an indoor visit follows, ask the establishment directly whether animals are welcome.
For other municipalities, use the official tourist offices linked in our Destinations. Check the reserve’s own access rules before a nature outing.
