Westende: villas and seaside architecture

Westende offers an approach to the coast through holiday buildings.

Read the resort through its architecture

Westende offers an approach to the coast through holiday buildings. The official heritage inventory documents Villa Les Zéphyrs and Grand Hôtel Belle Vue, also known as the Rotonde. These landmarks give an architectural walk a direction. Prepare it with an up-to-date map of public routes. We suggest taking time to observe a few buildings rather than rushing through a long list of façades.

Around Villa Les Zéphyrs

The heritage record describes a holiday house rebuilt during the interwar period and preserves information about its internal layout. From the street, look at the entrance, window shapes and roof. Compare your observations with the description and consider the house's place in its neighbourhood. If you want to go inside, ask about current visiting conditions. Protection or inclusion in an inventory does not in itself indicate opening days or accessibility.

The Rotonde as a second landmark

The official record places Grand Hôtel Belle Vue on Zeedijk and links it to architect Octave Van Rysselberghe. It can become the second goal of a walk about seaside architecture. Compare its scale with that of the villas and look at how the building addresses the seafront. Stay in authorised areas. Do not assume the interior or a private terrace can be visited. The exterior already offers enough detail for attentive observation.

Adapt the walk to the day

Use De Lijn to plan arrival at the first building and check how to return from the last point. You do not need a loop: following the same way back makes it easier to shorten the distance. Works may change access to the promenade, so ask for current local information before following an old brochure. Save time afterwards for the beach or a meal instead of automatically adding central Middelkerke. The two places can be separate day trips, giving each more time.
