The North Sea at Ostend: waves rolling onto the sandy beach under a dark, rainy sky

Forecast, observation and tide

A model forecast estimates a future situation; it is not an on-site measurement. An observation describes a reading at a particular place and time. A tide table answers a different question and cannot be derived from wave height. Missing information is not replaced with invented values.

Before a beach outing

For swimming, follow the signs, flags and instructions of lifeguards on site. A calm-looking sea or forecast value is not enough to determine that swimming is permitted. Prepare water sports with the organiser.
